City Counsel has approved a measure to spend $2.5 Million to boost business in San Diego and surrounding communities. The measure is to be funded by money from a defunct state tax credit program to support economic and work force development initiatives. There will be eight programs designed to boost business in San Diego through business development, job training, and support of urban spaces. While the primary benefactor will be southeastern San Diego, the program will impact start-up companies as well as new and existing businesses locally.
“Strong communities are built on the foundation of strong local economies,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer. “These initiatives will give local businesses and nonprofits the chance to grow and provide opportunity to residents in neighborhoods that have been traditionally underserved.”
One example of the program’s benefits includes the micro-brewery segment of the San Diego economy. The measure allotted $750,000 to help offset sewer costs for businesses that consume a lot of water including mirco-breweries, biotech companies and manufacturing sites. City Counsel and local politicians believe these businesses will be better prepared to add jobs and expand operations if they pay lower fees associated with the disposal of water used for business purposes.
